An online UPS (also called a double-conversion UPS) powers your equipment continuously through its inverter, not only when mains power fails. That makes it the most protective type of UPS for servers, medical equipment, lab instruments and industrial controls.
How an online UPS works:
1. Rectifier – converts incoming AC mains to DC
2. Battery bank – stays charged from the DC bus
3. Inverter – converts DC back to clean, regulated AC for your load
4. Static bypass – if the UPS has an internal fault or overload, the load moves to mains automatically
Because the load always runs from the inverter, there is zero transfer time when mains fails. Spikes, sags, frequency variations and electrical noise are filtered out.
Online UPS vs offline UPS:
• Transfer time – Online: zero | Offline: a few milliseconds
• Output – Online: regulated sine wave | Offline: raw mains until it fails
• Best for – Online: servers, medical, labs, CNC, data centres | Offline: home PCs, basic office equipment
• Cost – Online: higher | Offline: lower
Types of online UPS:
• Single-phase (1–10kVA): offices, clinics, retail, small server rooms – e.g. Liebert ITA2, GXT MT+
• Three-phase (10kVA and above): factories, hospitals, larger data rooms – e.g. Liebert S600E, EXS
• Modular: grow capacity by adding power modules – e.g. Liebert APM Plus
• With isolation transformer: for noisy industrial supply – e.g. Liebert S600E 3x3
Where online UPS is essential: hospitals and diagnostic centres, pharma and research labs, banks, IT companies and data centres, process automation and CNC machines.
